Meanwhile, the Outer Banks of North Carolina will still get Tropical Storm force winds late Thursday along with torrential rain, as the eyewall of Hurricane Earl stays over the ocean. Significant beach erosion will take place up and down the East Coast.

The chance of rain on Friday is running around 40 percent.

A strong ridge of high pressure is still parked over North Carolina. This ridge will deflect Hurricane Earl from a direct hit on the U.S. and keep the sun shining over the next several days. With starry skies tonight and some patchy fog late, it should be a great night for Friday night football. Kickoff temperatures should be in the mid-80s. Lows will be dropping to near 65 degrees by daybreak as the weekend gets underway.

A strong ridge of high pressure will be parked over Pennsylvania on Saturday, but a weak line of low pressure or trough will be slicing across Kentucky and Tennessee. An isolated storm will be possible on Saturday, especially east toward the Smokies and in counties near the Smokies. The chance of rain is running around 20 percent.

A strong ridge of high pressure will be settling in over Illinois on Thursday, allowing for more bright sunshine. However, an isolated storm may be possible on Friday, as some moisture may move or "backpedal" over the North Carolina mountains.

Today's high in Knoxville got up to 88 degrees.

Mostly clear skies are expected tonight with plenty of stars and the full "red" moon. According to the Farmers' Almanac, the full moon in August is sometimes referred as the full red moon because of the "reddish" color due to the sultry haze.

Lows will be dropping near 65 degrees by daybreak for many kids who will be heading back to school.

While a cold front running north to south across the Midwest drifts in this direction by Thursday, don't expect any rain by the time it gets here. This front is "moisture-starved" and will allow the temperature and the humidity to fall into the mid-80s by late in the work week as it moves away.
